Regarding inspections, it is always best to reference the original equipment manufacturers’ recommendations. If there is no such documentation, in Alberta the OH&S Act, Regulation and Codes section 13(1) can help provide guidance. If this Code requires anything to be done in accordance with a manufacturer’s specifications and they are not available or do not exist, an employer must develop and comply with procedures that are certified by a professional engineer as designed to ensure the operation is done in a safe manner, or (b) have the equipment certified as safe to operate by a professional engineer.

Work Safe Alberta has also created Forklift Health & Safety Best Practices Guidelines which can be found when searching for relative information. These best practices reference certain areas of code as well as other operating information. Examples as follows, an employer must ensure that powered mobile equipment is inspected by a competent worker for defects and conditions that are hazardous or may create a hazard. Work Safe Alberta also requires that an employer must ensure that a forklift truck has a durable and legible load rating chart that is readily available to the operator.

It would be beneficial to hire an inspection company such as Nortech Advanced NDT to assist with providing certified technicians and engineering guidance as required. Our team can help to inspect the pertinent areas to ensure that no significant damage exists that would prevent our customer base from continuing to operate forklift fleets.
